A2 Theatre Studies Performances not to be missed

Last weekend I spent Saturday with my A2 devising group polishing off a first draft performance to show to Alex Turner of theatre group non zero one the following day. Having received feedback from Phil King early on Sunday morning we felt, as a group, confident to AMAZE Alex with our 20-minute play. Vincent, Freya, Charlie and I got straight up and performed our piece to Alex. We then sat with him and discussed certain aspects: volume, physicality, structure etc. He gave us useful feedback, which we frantically tried to note down at the same time as getting back on stage and re-creating certain scenes. We walked out of the theatre feeling refreshed and excited with our pages and pages of to-do lists, ready to produce some INCREDIBLE theatre. The weekend was a HUGE success and anyone would be MAD to miss the A2 Theatre Studies Performances next week – they are going to be INSANE. Free tickets for Thursday 30 and Friday 31 at 7.30pm in the Bedales Olivier Theatre from tickets@bedales.org.uk or 01730 711511.

Incendiary Sixth Form Production

This week’s Sixth Form Production, to be performed in the Olivier Theatre from 15- 17 October,  is the incendiary Pornography by Simon Stephens; tracing the lives of Londoners in the electric days before the 7/7 bombings, when the Olympic bid and the Live 8 concerts were taking place abroad. Pornography is an extraordinary piece of work, in the spirit of Blake as much as The Clash. It is carved from seven blocks of text, with no characters or allocation of lines. Created in just four weeks, Pornography is both the story of our times but is timeless. For free tickets, please call 01730 711511 or email tickets@bedales.org.uk.

Exhibition and lecture on global awareness

Dr Shahidul Alam, a renowned international photographer, writer, curator and activist, will give the inaugural Global Awareness Lecture in The Quad at 8pm on Friday 11 October. This and the current Bedales Gallery exhibition build on links with Pathshala, the South Asian Institute of Photography, which were established through the Sam Banks Memorial Fund, currently supporting three of the Institute’s students. Having obtained his doctorate in Chemistry at London University, Dr Alam returned to his native Bangladesh where he turned to photography, founding the DRIK agency and exhibiting at leading venues such as MOMA in New York. The Gallery exhibition features four of Pathshala’s alumni, exploring pressing environmental and social issues in Bangladesh. For free tickets to the lecture contact tickets@bedales.org.uk or 01730 711511.

Award winning poet to read at Bedales

Another writer of true national standing reads in our poetry series on the evening of Tuesday 8 October at 8pm. Jo Shapcott holds the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry and, rare feat for a poet, is an outright winner of the Costa Book Award. These readings, relatively intimate in scale in the Olivier Theatre, are often rather special occasions. There will be a short Q&A session following the reading and the opportunity to purchase books in the foyer. Past readers include Douglas Dunn, Carol Ann Duffy, Andrew Motion, Brian Patten and Linton Kwesi Johnson. Tickets £7 from tickets@bedales.org.uk or 01730 711511.
